The English Game review, Culture Whisper
Watching wealthy feet kick a leather bag across a guarded pitch isn’t the most appealing way to spend a Saturday afternoon, but plenty of football fans love it. To baffled, introverted observers like this miserable critic, the ‘till-I-die’ crew resembles a jingoistic crowd of rival tribesmen willing to scream and swear and punch and kill for their beloved sport.
But The English Game, the new and enjoyably sentimental Netflix series co-created by Downton writer Julian Fellowes, examines the thrill of the sport by diving into its 19th-century point of origin. With co-creators Tony Charles and Oliver Cotton, Fellowes re-discovers why football can be exciting as much as important.
