The New Pope review, Culture Whisper
It’s hard to establish a fixed opinion on this now-continuing series from Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. Originally meant as a limited 10-part limited series, The Young Pope put Jude Law as a pontiff from New York: the sweet and tyrannical, empathetic and uncaring, modern and conservative, devout and atheistic Pope Pius XIII (born Lenny Belardo).
Part of the fun and frustration of the series is Lenny's unpredictable reactions, maintained by his Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Voiello (Silvio Orlando). Now, following Lenny's heart attack during his speech in Venice, he returns in The New Pope – albeit in a comatose, semi-spectral state. He’s sponged by a horny nun who, near his bedside, proceeds to masturbate.
