Gold Digger review, Culture Whisper
It’s always disappointing when a challenging concept, one that twists societal standards, deflates into an underwhelming, trashy experience. Gold Digger, the latest series from Thirteen writer Marnie Dickens, reverses the typical idea of older men dating younger women to craft an interesting premise: a 60-year-old woman falling for a thirty-something man, to the intense suspicion of her children.
This isn't not often seen in mainstream TV or cinema, especially not with a female lead who’s as refreshingly genuine as Julia Ormond (Howards End, Mad Men). But, almost immediately, Dickens relaxes that initial consciousness-raising objective; preferring instead to concentrate on the family's paranoia. She even joins them.
